Ghana GDP Annual Growth Rate

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Ghana expanded 16 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 over the same quarter, previous year. Unlike the commonly used quarterly GDP growth rate the annual GDP growth rate takes into account a full year of economic activity, thus avoiding the need to make any type of seasonal adjustment. Historically, from 2006 until 2011, Ghana's average quarterly GDP Growth was 1.58 percent reaching an historical high of 5.30 percent in March of 2008 and a record low of -5.10 percent in March of 2011. Ghana's has one of the highest GDP per capita in West Africa. The country has a diverse and rich resource base with gold, timber, cocoa, diamond, bauxite, and manganese being the most important source of foreign trade. In 2007, an oilfield which may contain up to 3 billion barrels of light oil was discovered. Yet, in spite of abundance of natural resources, a quarter of the population lives below the poverty line.
